Dr. John Turner, a third-generation traditional fiddler and the school's director and instructor, leads an intensive week of classes.

Registration - CDs

The Jink & Diddle School provides one full week of classes, directed by John Turner, with the option of group classes at different levels led by Colyn Fischer or David Gardner. The classes take place from Saturday afternoon, July 29, through Sunday morning, August 6, 2006. The schedule includes three group classes daily as well as five individual lessons throughout the week, allowing participants to receive personalized attention.

While attending the Jink & Diddle School, participants will have free time for practice, sightseeing, jam sessions, and shopping at the Mast. Additionally, there will be evening classes offering a variety of playing experiences, including Scottish Country Dancing, a Ceilidh, and the Scottish Dance Fiddle Orchestra.

Although Jink & Diddle is primarily designed for fiddlers and violinists, individuals interested in performing Scottish fiddle tunes on other melody instruments such as viola, cello, flute, recorder, mandolin, and more are also welcome. In the past, participants have brought a variety of instruments including violas, flutes, guitars, cellos, double bass viols, harpsichords, and others. During classes and practice hours, most participants focus on a single instrument, allowing for deep exploration of the music.

Chamber Music Workshop โ€” COMPOSERS CONFERENCE

To fully participate in the Jink & Diddle classes, it is recommended that attendees have some ability to read music. While playing by ear is also practiced, sight reading is a significant component of the curriculum. Participants are required to bring their own instrument and a music stand, as well as be prepared for extensive sight reading exercises. The classes typically cover around 60 tunes over the course of the week, sometimes exploring the same tune as a strathspey, reel, march, or even a slow air.

Dr. Turner, known for his dedication to preserving Scottish fiddling traditions, provides a music book from his collection of 18th Century Scottish fiddle music for the day classes each year. Additionally, a separate collection of ceilidh and dance music is provided for the evening classes. Previous years have focused on the music of renowned Scottish fiddlers such as Niel Gow, the Gow family, Dow, Mackintosh, William Marshall, Capt. Simon Fraser, Petrie, and others. The 2006 program will highlight a collection by Robert (Red Rob) Mackintosh.

Individuals attending the school also have the option to bring their own music for the individual lessons with Dr. Turner. These lessons provide an opportunity for personalized instruction tailored to the specific needs and interests of each participant.
